Sounds like an interesting idea; I've never considered tracking questions that need an answer. If you want to have those messages marked as read automatically, you could easily create a filter to do it. I have one which marks emails I send myself as read and applies a label called 'Notes' to them. Google Mail for your Domain is definitely a great choice though. The web interface is so much better than Outlook and the like. I'm not sure what I'd do if I couldn't view emails in a single conversation/thread.
